April 15, 2018 Garden Update:

Hello to All, You Garden and Food Bank Lovers!

Progress Last Week:

The Spring Rains Continue!  I guess you knew that, the rain falls on us all.  For gardeners it does influence just what tasks we are eager to do or even can do.  This last Saturday we planned a cabbage planting and we know from experience it is more fun in the sunshine.  But……. a terrific crew made do in the very wet soil, and planted about 600 cabbage starts, and covered them with plant-cover cloth.  The cover cloth prevents a cabbage root-eating pest called the cabbage root fly or Delia radicum.  The cover cloth keeps the flies out and thus prevents root damage and plant mortality, without the use of a pesticide.  The group that helped plant was impressive!  Not only impervious to the sometimes heavy rain, but accomplished the planting ahead of expectations!  Thank you all who joined us!

Note Schedule Change:  Thursday is the Home Opener for Capitol Campus afternoon, gardening.

Special Request:

Consider a donation to support the garden interns next year.  Part-time farm/garden workers in temporary employment with the Food Bank acting as employer, helps give the gardens week to week continuity, and helps us keep ahead of the weeds. Your donation to the Thurston County Food Bank with a request that your donation be used for Food Bank garden workers guarantees that your donation will be used that way.  Thank You!
