On June 6th I had the pleasure of representing the Olympia Kiwanis Club at the Olympia High School “Night of Stars”. This is an awards ceremony sponsored by the OHS Alumni Association to induct an alumni member into their OHS Hall of Fame, as well as celebrate the achievements of the current senior class. The OHS Performing Arts Center was a bit toasty for the 80+ degree day, but this was just a minor nuisance for the proud family members seated in the auditorium as they celebrated years’ worth of hard work, perseverance, community service, and achievements in academics/athletics/performing arts/music. Approximately 30 students were invited to the event and were all seated on the stage. The majority of the students were unaware of the actual award that would be presented to them, and they were left to anxiously wonder which scholarship would be announced with their name. [More]

SafePlace Donation
Olympia Kiwanis President Debra Seeman, Olympia Kiwanis Raffle Co-Chairs Karen Fraser and Les Eldridge presented a check to SafePlace Director Kellie Patton at the October 26, 2015, meeting of the Olympia Kiwanis Club.  The raffle was possible thanks to the generosity of Thurston County Merchants, including Cabelas, Panowitz Jewelers, Lucky Eagle Casino, and Anthony's Restaurant as part of our annual Harbor Days celebration during Labor Day weekend each year.  This year, $2,838.21profit was raised and donated to SafePlace thanks to the raffle ticket sales efforts of our members.  SafePlace is an advocacy agency and confidential shelter for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Thurston County.

Dr. Thomas L. "Les" Purce, the outgoing 15 year president of the Evergreen State College, spoke at the June 8, 2015 meeting of the Olympia Kiwanis Club.  Dr. Purce thanked the community for their support of this 1,000 acre college, which was before it's time when it was created to consider the ecological effects of an institution. Charles Shelan
Charles Shelan
Community Youth Services Executive Director
6/01/15 12:15 PM

Charles Shelan, a Past President and longtime (34 years) member of the Olympia Kiwanis Club spoke at the June 1, 2015 club meeting. Charles will be retiring the end of July from Community Youth Services after a 36 year career there as their Executive Director.

Originally called the Thurston Youth Services Society, there was confusion that this was the “correctional” institution for youth in Thurston County. Once the name was changed to Community Youth Services – AKA CYS - this private, non profit organization was able to continue it’s mission to work across the continuum of care for children youth and families.

Charles remembers a bumpy, but productive, career with CYS. [More]

  Achieving By Believing
Andrew Hughes, a senior at Olympia High School was recognized at the May 16, 2016 meeting of the Olympia Kiwanis Club for Achieving by Believing.    Andrew's parents, and his teacher Ryan Garrett were present to honor Andrew, who was voted by his class as the "MOST SPIRITED" student for the class of 2016! Andrew is a flag waver at the OHS football games and waves and parades a flag whenever the team makes a score.  He also plays in and coaches for the unified sports basketball league and volunteers as a reader at two local grade schools.  As his teacher Ryan Garrett said, "Andrew has a good attitude and believes in himself and the people around him."
Andrew was presented with a certificate and $25 Amazon gift card.

YMCA Safe Kids Day
Bud Blake, Jan Britt, Lucille Carlson, Linda Myhre Enlow, Bob Lien, Victor Minjares, Linda Oosterman, Dave Peeler, Dan Seachord, and Tawni Sharp from the Olympia Kiwanis Club all participated in the South Sound YMCA's Safe Kids's Day on April 25, 2015, at the Briggs YMCA.  Thanks to the Safe Kids Foundation's donation of bicycle helmets and the help of our Olympia High School Key Club members, helmets were fitted and distributed, for free, to over 60 children.  Just one more way to make a difference and improve the world!
